Know the Rules for Your Move in the United Kingdom
Requirements depend on whether the move stays within Great Britain, is based in Northern Ireland, or crosses the UK border.
Before you rely on this
Unlike the US or Canada, the UK does not license movers by state, province, or territory. Vehicle operator licensing is essentially nationwide: it is administered by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and the Traffic Commissioners for Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales), and by the Department for Infrastructure’s Transport Regulation Unit (TRU) for Northern Ireland, which runs its own separate legislation closely mirroring the GB regime rather than administering the same statute. The operator licence is held by the company operating the goods vehicles. Always confirm current requirements directly before hiring a mover.
What kind of move is it?
England, Scotland, and Wales share the same operator licensing regime, administered by DVSA and the Traffic Commissioners.
Great Britain →Its own separate legislation closely mirrors the Great Britain regime, administered by the Department for Infrastructure.
Northern Ireland →Crossing the UK border: a Standard International operator’s licence and international road haulage permits for movers using their own vehicles. The CMR Convention excludes furniture removal, so domestic contract law continues to govern liability.
International: UK →Select a jurisdiction
